Yäulandt, (pronounced Yoi-lahnt), is an ancient colonial state, that was established on March 5th, 10 BC. It was located on what is now Yow Kingdom Island. The land was a Dukedom, and was very small. It barely had a military, but it did have a thriving economy. Most of the citizens came from Alemania, Osterreach, and the Viking territories on the mainland. Other inhabitants were High Penguins, who were mostly freed slaves. In 150 AD a hurricane destroyed the houses and crops on the island. The next day the Penguin Empire invade the island. They burnt down buildings, and set the crops on fire. They took back some High Penguin citizens as slaves.

Yäulandt soon became forgotten, until a book written by one of the slaves was discovered. The book spoke about a large island named Yäulandt far from the Antarctic Peninsula. At first some historians argued that this was not Yow Kingdom Island, saying it could have been Hontana. However more data was found, and it was concluded that Yäulandt was the "ancient Yow".

History

The first inhabitants were Viking tribes from Alemania and Osterreach who were explorers. They were brutal barbarians and frequently attacked Penguin Empire cities, freeing High Penguin slaves, who became one of their own. The barbarians discovered the island on the way home, and decided to stay there. They were led by an admiral named Gjärbles Von Wein, an Osterrean, who claimed the land for the Old German States and made himself duke. The two major cities of Mönner and Slaßer (Slasser) were founded, with Mönner as the capital. The island was quickly inhabited and many farms were made. Trade with the rest of the Viking community continued, and it was a place where many traders would stop to rest. Mönner became a thriving city, with many inhabitants. Mönner was located in present day Nilo. The city was based on fishing, and trade a lot. To protect the city, a massive wall made of stone and wood was built along the northern side of the city. This wall was to protect any invasions that may come from the north, and with the wall place the city didn't grow beyond that. Because of this the northern part of Yow Kingdom Island was never explored by the inhabitants.

Overtime Mönner grew, and grew. Soon it was a busy port city that was well known throughout Antarctica. Slasser, located in modern day Hillnit Town, also continued to grow. Slasser was well known for its farms, and nice living spaces. It was full of luxury, which is why many rich penguins moved there. It only took up half of current day Hillnit. By the year 100 AD, the other three major cities of Røllein, Scærtë, and Dòlpëræng were formed and thriving.

In 140 AD relations between Yäulandt and the Penguin Empire had suddenly dropped. This was due to the fact that Yäulandt was building its military, and because rumors were being spread that Yäulandt would invade the Penguin Empire very soon. The relations got to a point so low that the Penguin Empire started to invade Yäulandt on a weekly basis. This was to weaken their military, economy, and enviroment. The Penguin Empire came at full force, but never conquered Yäulandt. These invasions weakened the colony, and forced many citizens to move away. Records have been discovered of citizens moving from Yäulandt, but being sunk by Penguin Empire ships on their way to the Ninja Archipelago.

Culture

The culture is highly remnicient of the Alemanian and traditional Viking Cultures.

Architecture

All the five major cities were surrounded by a large wall that was made of Wood and mortar, while small towns were just surrounded by a tall wooden fence-like wall. All homes in both the cities, towns, farms, and villages were one storied and were made of mortar and wooden timber framing with roofs made of thatch or sod. Homes of richer families were longer, while the central building of the city or town where everyone met was the longest house in the area. Most areas simply had dirt roads, but some cities had some makeshift cobblestone streets made.

Fashion

The Yäulandter men wore traditional viking tunics made of wool or fur. Regular men did not wear hats or helmets but the Soldiers wore helmets made of bronze, steel, or iron. Women always wore dresses that were made of linen or wool and had a large pocket in front to hold goods. The women occationally wore a white bandana over their hair during warmer or cold weather. Women liked to wear beaded necklaces made of whale bone, while men wore rings made of brass, bronze, nickel, or silver.

Cuisine

The cuisine of Yäulandt was the same of ancient Alemania and other Viking Regions. Because sugar and spices were not introduced, the early Viking cuisine was rather bland. Fishing was a major industry on the island, as they caught and ate Mullet, Silver Fish, Fluffy Fish, Squid, Octopus, Crabs, and Whale meat and blubber. Products made on the island were mostly vegetables and grain, but there were some fruits and O-Berries harvested also. Popular foods eaten from both ancient Alemanian and Viking cultures were goat cheese and milk, loaves of bread, fruit juices (water was not sanitary), and Cream Soda variants. However, the most common kind of dish were soups and stews that were filled with various vegetables like cabbage, carrots, asparagus, and more, mixed with whatever else they could find, like fish and whale blubber.

Military

A soldier in uniform.

The military was made up of Viking warriors. They just wore normal Viking clothing, except these had swords attached to the belts. The soldiers were very strong, and trained well. However the military had small numbers, only 900 in active duty. The military protected Yäulandt from pirates, and the Penguin Empire invaders. The military was respected by nearly all the citizens, except for rebels. The military obeyed the governor completely, no matter what. Though some figured if the governor tried to establish Yäulandt a separate nation from Alemania the army would rebel, since most of the soldiers were imported from Alemania's military.

Navy

The navy was made out of wooden Viking long boats, which were very large. The average size of each long boat was 25ft, and the width was 10ft. The navy really liked to keep their long boats long, and slightly skinny. The long boats had sails, and oars. Villains, and criminals were taken by the government and forced to row the boat when the winds were low. Some long boats had giant rock spears on the bow. The Vikings placed them there to be able to ram into enemy ships, and sink them.

Economy

The economy was set on fishing, lumbering, and trading. Yow Kingdom Island was completely covered with woods when the vikings came to the island. Fishing was also common because of the abundance of Fluffy Fish, and Mullets around the island. The lumber jacks provided so much wood on the market, that many fishing vessels were made each year. This provided fishermen with the needed materials to fish too, because fishing poles were made of wood.

Trading

Common trade items included wood, gold, silver, copper, bronze, wool, and some seasonings. Yäulandt was well known for its great seasonings, and large amounts of wood. However it took the average vessel a month to make from Yäulandt to the NA, so some trade had to be going to other nations. Some trade was done with other nations on the mainland, that weren't ruled by the Penguin Empire.

Trivia

  • There have been records discovered describing Yäulandt as a powerful empire. These records are scribes found in libraries in Alemania. However, it is uncertain if this is true or not, because the scribes were written by fictional writers not historians.
