The Osterrean Empire (German: Kaisertum Österreich), often shortened to simply Osterreach, is a small German-speaking country in the Ninja Archipelago. It is bordered by Magyaria to the east, Snowzerland to the west, Rusca to the south, and Puffle'and and Alemania to the north. While officially a federal constitutional monarchy led by an Emperor, Osterreach is de facto an absolute monarchy with the Kaiser Swiss Ninja Hochstadt holding the title of Emperor of Osterreach.
Historically a powerful and influential empire within the Ninja Archipelago, the Hochstadt Family-ruled Osterrean monarchy was abolished in 1919 following the country's defeat in the Khanzem War, after which a republican government was formed and the country became known as the Republic of Ostmark. After strengthening its historical ties with Magyaria and more recent alliances with Ed Island, Ostmark was an initial signatory to what would become the Bridgestadt Pact. Ostmark remained closely aligned with the Bridgestadt Pact throughout the False War until its conclusion following the STINC War. The close of the 20th century brought a period of relative peace and demilitarization for Ostmark, and many civil programs flourished with redirected funds from the reduced military budget.
Ostmark was one of the primary targets of the greater Snoss Territorial Expansions in 2009 that sparked the subsequent Osterrean War, where the nation was ultimately defeated and conquered by Snowzerland as one of its German States. While reformed as a monarchy and retaining the state title of Empire of Osterreach under its historical rule by the Hochstadt Family, virtually all of the current Osterrean government operates as an apparatus of the Snoss state with little to no national autonomy.
Osterreach is currently a member of the Ninja Archipelago Union and German States, as well as a suspended member of the Bridgestadt Pact as the Ostmark government-in-exile.
Etymology
Osterreach literally translates to "Eastern Reach," in reference to its status as the easternmost of the German States. Its inhabitants are known as Osterreans
During the republican period from 1919 to 2009, Osterreach was known under the state title of Ostmark.
History
Early History
Osterreach's history began when the island was inhabited by Viking Penguins around 50 BC, around the same time Alemania was inhabited. Osterreach was temporarily part of the Penguin Empire for a short period of time, but the Penguin Empire didn't colonize or leave any major cultural effect on the island. After the fall of the Penguin Empire in 450, Osterreach became a territory of neighboring Alemania.
In 1278, Rudolph Hochstadt of Alemania was elected to be the first King of Osterreach, who would still in turn serve the Emperor of the Holyswissian Empire. The Hochstadt Family ruled for several centuries after the rule of King Rudolph I, and reached a golden age during the 14th and 15th Centuries, which was when Batavia was part of Osterreach for a short amount of time before they handed it to Castilla. Around 1780, the Frankterrans invaded Alemania and Osterreach and abolished the Holyswissian Empire, making Osterreach its own independent country.
1900s
Osterreach joined Alemania and Magyaria as allies of the Khanzem reigme during the Khanzem War as a result of their shared Germanic culture and close military ties. After the war ended in a Nationalist Front defeat, the governments of the Good Guys abolished the Osterrean Hochstadt monarchy in 1919 which led to the country's reformation as the newly-named Republic of Ostmark.
As the Republic of Ostmark, the country maintained its ties to Magyaria despite provisions in the Treaty of Snome forbidding an explicit military alliance. When the former Khanzem ally of Imperial Ed Island descended into the Wulfen War in the 1930s, Ostmark along with Magyaria provided the loyalist government with a significant amount of military and humanitarian aid that contributed greatly to Ed Island's victory over the Neumenian Reich.
Following its victory in the Wulfen War, Ed Island approached Ostmark and Magyaria in 1945 with the Treaty of Mutual Cooperation as a way to solidify the so-called "Special Relationship" between these nations, in a final defiant act against the Treaty of Snome. This treaty was expanded in 1948, when signatories from each country alongside several more politically-aligned nations convened in the Ed Island capital of Bridgestadt for the Bridgestadt Accords, which would provide the founding documents for the Bridgestadt Pact alliance. This pact ensured security and friendship between Osterreach and its allies, as well as provided the framework for a united military alliance against the continuous growing threat of the Snowviet Union and its allied nations in the Comintern. The formation of the Bridgestadt Pact was seen as an immediate existential threat to the Comintern, which responded with its own military build up in preparation for a direct conflict. This mutual militarization became known as the False War, a political and ideological struggle throughout the continent in the latter half of the 20th century.
In 1956, a Snowviet-backed uprising by the socialist extremist organization STINC occurred in the region of Checkia. Culturally distinct from the rest of Ostmark, many Checkians wished to form their own nation or even a federation with the Markia region of Magyaria, with the presence of STINC extremists only fueling the growing cultural tensions. Ultimately this uprising was put down, but other ethnic tensions continued to rise across Ostmark. Fearing a breakup of the nation, the Ostmarkian president proposed a federalization of the country with new autonomous states forming mostly along ethnic and cultural divides. This process was a success, with Checkians and Snowvenians having a greater role in and support of the Ostmarkian government.
When the kingdoms of Olde Antarctica were violently overthrown by STINC in a coup d'état and the tyrannical state of STINC-zachal was established, Ostmark was the first among the Bridgestadt Pact to push for an official declaration of war against this perceived escalation by the Comintern. During the STINC War, Ostmark was primarily involved in operations against the Snowviet Union and along the Weddell Sea and present-day Freezeland. With the STINC War ending in an Allied Forces victory and marking the end of the False War with it, Ostmark experienced a massive demilitarization as with Ed Island and Magyaria. With the military budget shrunk, many new social and civilian programs received greater funding such as Ostmark's small space program.
2000s
The rise of Snowzerland in the mid-2000s was seen with skepticism and growing alarm within Ostmark with the Kaiser's wishes to unite all of the Ninja Archipelago under the Snoss banner.
After a period of threats and posturing, the brief Osterrean War began in 2009 when Ostmark was invaded by Snowzerland with the goal of direct annexation of the German States. A significant portion of Snowzerland's strength during this initial blitz were made up of various monarchist factions and other malcontents within Ostmark, who saw an opportunity to restore the country under its historical Hochstadt crown. Despite the triggering of the Bridgestadt Pact's defense articles and heavy resistance from its members, Ostmark was overrun and capitulated to the Snoss government within two months. Many citizens of Ostmark, including much of the country's government, fled to Magyaria where a government-in-exile was established. With the collapse of the Republican government, Ostmark was once again renamed to Osterreach to reflect its Hochstadt heritage.
Immediately following Snoss victory in the war, the Kaiser Swiss Ninja Hochstadt had himself crowned Emperor of Osterreach with the ceremonial Hochstadt regalia of the empire. While an official state title, this move was largely symbolic to placate his monarchist supporters within his new territory. Throughout the following months, many purges would be conducted by the Snoss Secret Service within the nation regarding loyalist Republican forces and any other groups or individuals deemed a threat to Snoss rule, with many of those arrested being sent to the prison complex on Pen Chi Island.
Despite various movements and official stances throughout Antarctica regarding the legitimacy of the nation's current government, Osterreach remains firmly under Snoss control. Snowzerland regularly threatens countries calling for the liberation of Osterreach with conventional or nuclear destruction, deterring any military attempts at reclaiming the country from occupation rule.
Geography
Osterreach is a very mountainous nation, with the famous Osterrean Alps making up much of the western side of the country.

Government
Osterreach is currently under the rule of Swiss Ninja and Snowzerland, with very little autonomy. The local Osterrean government only exists for bureaucratic purposes and to maintain the image of an independent nation, but holds no actual power to govern the island.
The Ostmark Government-in-exile currently exists in Magyaria and maintains its position as the legitimate government of Osterreach. While enjoying mixed recognition by several Antarctic powers opposed to Snowzerland, no major action has been taken by the government-in-exile or its supporters due to the threat of Snoss retaliation.
Military
Currently, Snowzerland uses several of the alpine regions of Osterreach for advanced military technology projects. Several TIE Fighter bases are located here, where the most advanced models are stationed and tested.
Much of the Kaiser's Stormtroopers are drafted from the Osterrean population.
National Symbols
The current flag of Osterreach is a red-white-red tricolor flag with the coat of arms in the center. As the Republic of Ostmark, the nation used a similar flag but with a green and white isosceles triangle on the right side.
Economy
As a member of the Ninja Archipelago Union and Gold Coin Alliance, Osterreach uses the Gold Coin (Symbol: ) as its official currency. While all gold coins are technically legal tender, Snoss law mandates the use of coins minted with Swiss Ninja Hochstadt on their face.

Population
As of the 2022 Greater Snowzerland census, Osterreach has a population of 12,400,000. The most populous state is Osterreach, followed by Checkia.
Ethnic Groups
Over 80% of the population of Osterreach is comprised of Germanic Viking Penguins, with the remainder a diverse mix of Adelie penguins and other common species.
Language
The Osterrean government recognizes German, Czech, and Slovenian as official languages of the nation, with Italian being given official minority language status. All documents and proceeds in the government are distributed in German, but there are local distributions in these languages available.
Culture
Osterreach is a very multicultural nation, with three major and several minor cultural groups. These include the Checkians in the north, Osterreans, and Snowvenians in the south.
After the Khanzem War, Osterreach experienced a "musical golden age." Composers such as Ludvig van Beethaven, Frozart, and Icdyn became famous figures of Osterreach and gained fame across Olde Antarctica.
Cuisine
Typical Osterrean dishes are sauerkraut, mashed potatoes, Fish Schnitzel, salads, soups, and strudel for dessert. Osterreans like to drink Hot Chocolate or Coffee in the morning and Cream Soda or Tea in the afternoon.
Sports
Osterreach's national sport is football (soccer), with skiing, snowboarding, and ice skating being popular during the winter. Osterreach's numerous mountain ranges has attracted many skiers and snowboarders from across Antarctica, and many major international snow sports competitions have been held in Osterreach for over a century.
