Maxwell the Demon, referred to as Maxwell or Max, is an odd Demon Penguin, classified as a boogie, that works in the Bureau of Fiction. He specializes in thermodynamics and works in both the Thermodynamics Office in the Department of Science and the Repair Office in the Department of Machinery.
Background
No one really knows where Maxwell came from or his early history, but what is known is how Maxwell got into the Bureau of Fiction. Directly after Professor Shroomsky's lawsuit against Triskelle in early 2009 (the lawsuit that was followed by the Great Darktonian Pie War), a strange, sinister being broke into the Bureau of Fiction and subsequently sabotaged the Laws of Thermodynamics. Gary estimated that it would take at least two months for the damage to be totally fixed, and by that time the universe would fall apart. Then an anonymous creature posted a written notice on Mayor McFlapp's office door, stating that he would come to the Bureau at 3:00 PM sharp the following day to fix the Laws of Thermodynamics.
The next day, at precisely 3 PM, a cloud of dark red smoke burst from the floor of the Department of Science. Lightning flashed. A mighty whirlwind sent papers flying as a tall Demon Penguin stepped out of the smoke. The Demon Penguin had a nametag that read "Hello My Name is Maxwell" and carried a toolbox full of strangely-shaped tools. Within ten minutes, he had fixed the sabotage without one word.
Mayor McFlapp was so pleased (and at the same time, spooked) that he offered the Demon Penguin a permanent job. The penguin just nodded his head and established a cubicle in a corner of the Office.
Ever since, Maxwell has been working solemnly at the BoF.
Involvement
Maxwell's job description is "Maintenance". Basically, he just makes sure that anything to do with thermodynamics is working fine.
Other than doing maintenance, Maxwell also repairs broken machines. He works extremely quickly for a repairman (er, penguin), usually finishing jobs within 45 minutes.
Maxwell also invented, designed, and created the complex of Brownian ratchets that power the Bureau. He is very proud of them.
Trivia
- He's like the Demon Penguin version of Fred or Herb. He even speaks with a monotone voice.
- Since Demon Penguins are never totally good, it is assumed he is either neutral or just less evil than his brethren.
- He claims he has an uncle called Laplace, who can predict everything that unfolds using data stolen from some other universe's Bureau of Fiction.
- Maxwell is a parody of the thought experiment Maxwell's demon, which seemingly violates the Second Law of Thermodynamics.
