The Republic of Lisboagal, or just regularly called Lisboagal is a Portuguese speaking country in the Iberia region of the Ninja Archipelago next to Castilla. The ancestors of the ancestors of the Dorkugese Penguin originated from this island as it has been inhabited since 300 BC. Once a great colonial power, Lisboagal owned the largest island in Latin Antarctica - Nutzil, only to lose it in the mid-1800s. Only just now recently, in 1999, did Lisboagal fight back for its independence from Castilla for the second time in history and is slowly climbing into influence with its largest colony, Regiao Lisboaguesa.

History

Lisboagal was inhabited by mixed groups of Iberian Viking Penguins and regular penguins around 300 BC as unorganized tribes. In 106, the Penguin Empire invaded the territory and named the region of the two islands of Lisboagal and Castilla to be Iberia. the Island of Lisboagal was named as it is now by the Penguin Empire after the city of Lisboa, which was famous for its grand port that sold famous variations of Grape Juice and Cream Soda versions of it.

Lisboagal thrived as part of the Iberia province of the Penguin Empire, but in the 400's AD, the island was invaded by mixed Viking invaders, permanently ending the Penguin Empire's rule in Lisboagal. 100 years later, Lisboagal was invaded by the Mwa Mwaists who also invaded Castilla to create the Ow-Ondowis state. Nevertheless, the original penguin and puffle inhabitants who lived there before did not their rule, and a coalition with the resistance in Castilla and the help of the Knights of Frankterre, the Reconquista of Castilla and Lisboagal began in 900 AD.

The country was completely liberated by 1300, and they established a monarchy on the throne and made the city of Lisboa the capital. After the Reconquista, Lisboagal experienced an ebullient renaissance starting in 1300, when many castles, palaces, and beautiful cities were made. Trade heavily increased and began making relations with other countries. In 1337, Lisboagal made an alliance with Puffle'and, which became the longest-standing alliance in Antarctica since both countries are still allies today.

In 1383, the King of Castilla attempted to seize the throne of Lisboagal but several revolts occurred and was led by a penguin named John da Avis, who eventually won the battles against Castilla and became the Prince of Lisboagal. Lisboagal then became a Dependency of Castilla, though it had its own monarch that had to report to the King of Castilla. In 1415, Prince Henri the Navigator opened the Ninja Archipelago's first navigating/ship sailing school in Sangres, and the Lisboagese were the first to massively explore Antarctica, with the Castillans following in their footsteps not long after. The Lisboaguese quickly made their way to Pengolia, Malesia, and Zhou, where they started to monopolize trade. Quickly, Lisboagal discovered the island of Nutzil and established it as its first and largest colony.

In 1580, the royal lineage of the Monarch died out again because they did not produce heirs, and Castilla invaded Lisboagal to create the Iberian Union. Thus, because Lisboagal wanted to be a sovereign country, they joined the 80 years war to gain their independence from Castilla along with Batavia. Following the 80 years war was the Eight Years War, which was fought against Batavia over the ownership of Nutzil, with Lisboagal as the victor. Afterward, Lisboagal stayed a peaceful nation that continued to trade and communicate with nations like Osterreach and the UK until 1813, when Frankterre invaded the country. Immediately, the royal family of Lisboagal escaped to Nutzilia and established their living there. Nevertheless, the country was liberated in 1815, but the monarch did not return to the Lisboagese mainland until 1821.

King João IV was forced to return to the mainland because of the many revolts, but he left his son, Pedro, in charge of the colony...which turned out to be a bad mistake. Pedro decided to betray his father and allied with the elite Nutzilians and declared independence. Immediately, Lisboagal had lost its most economically important and largest colony, and the country immediately suffered a depression. Eventually, they made their way back up a little bit, until King Carlos I of Lisboagal came to the throne. Under his rule, he made the country go into debt twice, and he and his heir son were murdered in a revolt, thus ending the monarchy in Lisboagal in 1910.

Lisboagal became a Republic, but not for long. In 1913, a Dictator named Oliver came to power, and he seized control of the whole island right before the Khanzem War broke out. During the war, Lisboagal stayed neutral, but Oliver personally admired Khanzem. Eventually, Oliver passed away in 1937, and the Republic was restored and there was peace. In 1990, Castilla re-invaded the island during the rise of Colonial Antarctica, but Lisboagal was able to regain their independence again nine years later.

Today, Lisboagal is trying it's best to rebuild itself as a powerful nation.

Geography

The Island of Lisboagal is rather warm during the summer months and cool during the winter. Lisboagal has one large river, known as the Tagus, which splits the island into half as it flows from a lake on the other side of the island to the sea right next to the capital of Lisboa. The northern areas above the Tagus river are mountainous near the center of the island and have several river valleys. The areas south of the river Tagus is mostly rolling plains. The southern tip of Lisboagal, called the Argaves, are known for their distinct rocky shores with a beautiful coastline. The western coastline of Lisboagal, including the capital city and the bay of Lisboa, have smooth sandy beaches with clear blue water. The rest of the shores are very rocky and inhospitable.

Culture

Cuisine

Because they're an island like all of their neighbors, the Lisboagese love to eat fish, especially cod, which happens to be abundant around the whole island and tend to inhabit the waters around the island. The Cod valued so much in Lisboagal, it is said that there are over one hundred dishes that involve the cod in it. Other famous fish eaten in Lisboagal are sardines and the regular grey fish. The most popular and national dish of Lisboagal is Bacalhau, which is dried and/or salted codfish that comes with many side dishes that can come in 300 other variants. Typical on the go meals of Lisboagal include grilled Cod or Fluffy Fish Sandwiches, Rice with Fish, and roasted fish. The Lisboagese also make a special type of Sweet Bread made with honey, which has become somewhat popular in some areas in the USA. Then, for desserts, Lisboagese are well known for their delicious pastries that have been made since the Middle Ages. Back then, they were made with Almonds, Cream Soda, Grape Juice, flour, and eggs, but now more exotic ingredients, like sugar, chocolate, and vanilla have been added. Famous drinks from Lisboagal are Grape Juice and their own variants of Cream Soda. During the summer, farmers grow cherries. After picking, they make several dishes which include cherries, like tarts.

Architecture

Lisboagal's architecture is very similar to Castillan architecture; they both have whitewashed buildings and reddish terracotta roofs. Other building colors include light red, orange, yellow, and light blue. However, some areas of Lisboagal's towns and villages are not so well maintained and have chipping paint on some buildings in some villages and towns. Cobblestone is still widely used in all towns, villages, and cities. Stone is mainly used in rural farmhouses or villages.

Sports

Like it's neighbor Castilla, Lisboagal's most popular sport is Association Football/Soccer, as it is played and enjoyed by the majority of the nation's citizens. Lisboagal's most famous association football/soccer player is Christopher Odlanor, the captain of Lisboagal's national association football team and a popular player in Castilla's Real Metido football league. Christopher Odlanor is a big rival against FC Varcelono's prodigy, Leon el Messiah. Other sports played in Lisboagal include canoeing, cycling, car racing, and Card Jitsu.

Military

The Military of Lisboagal has a long history. They first started out as a large group of gallant knights who helped in the Reconquista, but as the gun was introduced to them in warfare, the knights were replaced by regular footsoldiers that looked similar to Castillan ones, except that the Lisboagese soldiers were mainly all farmers who wore their regular farming outfits. Eventually, the army adopted the farmer outfit style and created their uniforms based on the farmers' designs in honor of Lisboagal's pride in their agriculture. The Army of Lisboagal is part of the Order of Avis since the order originated and is located in their country.

Sadly, although Lisboagal has a pretty good military, their police forces are rather careless and have been alleged to be linked with the Ligurian Mafia. After all, many Ligurians like Papa Tremezzo have their own vacation villas in Lisboagese countryside, where it is grape country. It is also noted that in the capital, Lisboa, many corrupt penguins, natives, and immigrants, attempt to openly sell Doom Weed and Ditto to passerby tourists and citizens alike. They are never caught, nor do the Police truly care about their activities, even if they hear about it.

Economy

Lisboagal is a mainly rural society that continues to revolve mostly around farming and fishing. Notable foods grown in Lisboagal are O-Berries, almonds, Cream Soda Root, grapes, wheat, and rice. Notable fish caught in Lisboagal are mainly cod, sardines, tuna, mackerel, mullet, grey, and fluffy fish in the sea, while over 100 other different species are caught and eaten in the freshwater rivers and lakes, including the catfish. However, not all 100 different types of Fish are caught since several of these species are considered endangered. Other important Lisboagese products are cork, which is where it was invented and mass produced. Cork is Lisboagal's main export and is grown on Cork tree farms in the north of the island. Mostly, cork is used to seal bottles of Cream Soda and used at times to make floors or barrels. Tourism is also important to the nation, and the cities of Lisboa and Puerta happen to be very historic cities with many things to do. The southern coast of Lisboagal also has many scenic coastlines and the inland areas of the island have many small villages and a lot of farmland. Compared to the rest of the Ninja Archipelago, Lisboagal has been considered to be the second poorest country in the AU, behind Snowprus, one of its allies. The nation itself isn't poor, but it is compared poor to the other nations' standards.

Government

The Lisboagese contains three political branches, the Legislative, the Executive, and the Judicial Branch. Unlike popular belief, the Legislative Branch is more powerful than the Executive.

Legislative Branch

The Legislative Branch consists of the National Assembly, which contains 230 members that are elected in by the Political Parties. Members of the Legislature are elected into office every 2 years and can serve up to 4 terms at most. The Legislature is responsible for accepting and vetoing laws, although, with the approval of the Judicial Branch, it may also propose laws as well. A law that is accepted by only the Legislature can be vetoed by the President, but the Legislative Branch can overturn the Veto with a 4/5 of a vote. A law that is accepted by the Legislature and the Judicial Branch cannot be overturned by the Executive Branch unless the President, Vice President, Prime Minister, and the Cabinet all veto the bill.

Executive Branch

The Executive Branch mainly consists of the President, the Vice President, the Prime Minister, and the Cabinet. The Cabinet members are chosen and ousted by the President, but it is overseen by the Prime Minister, although the Prime Minister can not oust or choose Cabinet Members. The President is considered the head of state and the Commander in Chief of the Military. The Prime Minister deals with the foreign affairs of the nation, and he is also the head of the National Lisboagese Treasury. The Cabinet consists of members who are the heads of bureaus that oversee Agriculture, Transportation, Security, Education, and Utilities.

Judicial Branch

The Judicial Branch contains a large council that ALL consist of Knights and can only consist of Knights. The Judicial Branch oversees the court system of the country and the highest power of the Judicial branch, the Supreme Court...OF JUSTICE!!! has the power to try the president, the prime minister, any member of the Cabinet, and any member of the National Assembly on charges of breaking laws. The Judicial Branch has the only power to impeach the president and/or the Prime Minister.

Politics

Lisboagal contains several political parties that are represented in the National Assembly and the most popular throughout the whole country.

Partido dos Agricultores

The Most popular of the parties, the Partido dos Agricultores, or also known as the Party of the Farmers, mainly consists of farmers and all citizens who are involved in the agriculture business, as well as the fishing industry. The party believes that Lisboagal's economy should be mainly based on agriculture, not in the industry. The Majority of puffles are in this party since most of them tend to be O-Berry farmers. They take up about 54% of the National Assembly, and they support a democratic but a very imperialistic country. This party rivals with the Communist and Monarchist parties during political debates.

Partido Cavaleiros

The Partido Cavaleiros, known in English as the Knights Party, was founded by a group of Lisboagese Knights. It's supporters mainly consists of the city dwellers who could be craftsmen, artists, musicians, or business workers. The party believes that Knights should rule the nation in the Legislature because they are looked up upon as loyal and trustworthy leaders who will bring the nation to more glory. The Cavaleiros Party takes up 36% of the National Assembly, with all of their representatives being knights. The presidents that they have elected into office have also been knights also. The Knights Party is the second most popular political party in Lisboagal, and it is one of the two final parties that go head to head with each other in the presidential elections. Although it competes with the Partido dos Agricultores during presidential campaigns, they relatively do not rival much, due to the fact that they are both democratic. The Partido Cavaleiros rivals deeply with the Partido Comunista and the Partido Monarquista.

Partido Comunista

The Partido Comunista, or the Communist Party, is the second to least popular party in Lisboagal. This party believes that Lisboagal should be a Communist country that should rule it's economy and control all businesses. It believes in political, racial, as well as economic equality as well. Somehow, most Lisboagese does not support the group, and the citizens that do support the Communist Party tend to be lower class citizens who are either poor farmers or lower class city dwellers who work in the few factories in Lisboagal. The Communist Party takes up about 6% of the National Assembly, and although their number of seats on the assembly have varied through the years, they never went over or reached 10%. The Communist party has also never had any of their presidential candidates elected, either. They rival mostly with the Knights Party and the Monarchist Party.

Partido Monarquista

The Partido Monarquista, called the Monarchist Party in English, is the least powerful political party in Lisboagal. It only contains 4% of the National Assembly. The Monarchist Party believes that the monarchy, ousted 100 years ago in 1910, should be restored to Lisboagal and the nation should become a Constitutional Monarchy. Although the party is the smallest in the nation, it hosts some of Lisboagal's most heated debates between the ideas of having a Monarchy or a Democracy, which happen once every two years. Because the last King of Lisboagal had no children, one descendant from his brother has claimed the throne, Dante Piu, Duke of Braga. Thus, because the Monarchist party does not support democracy, the current Monarch pretender is listed as a candidate for the Presidential elections every four years each time. Surprisingly enough, they get more votes than the Communist Party's Presidential candidate, although he has never reached the final presidential election campaign. The Monarchist Party still catches the interest of all Lisboagese Citizens today and is a reminder of their cultural past as a former monarchy powerhouse.

Language

Lisboagal speaks mostly Portuguese, which derives from the Penguin Empire language of Latin. As time went on and the influence of other invaders came in place, that version of Latin changed drastically and became known to be what Portuguese is now. Portuguese is somewhat similar to the language of Spanish, which originates from Castilla, since both languages' origins heavily derive from Latin. In a way, some words of Portuguese relate to French, another Latin Derived language, which comes from Frankterre. Differences between Spanish and Portuguese are that Portuguese have tildes over their a's... (ã) while Spanish have tildes on their n's.... (ñ), and also the Portuguese use different accent marks that go the opposite direction of Spanish accent marks, although Portuguese tends to use both but Spanish only uses one side. Portuguese is spoken thought all of Lisboagal and is a requirement for everyone who lives there. Foreign languages are not required to take until Lisboagese students reach Secondary School, where they can have the option to learn English, Spanish, French, or German. The requirement is to learn two other languages, and English is mainly one of them, which explains why Lisboagese penguins and puffles can speak and understand English exceptionally well.
