Richard "Dick" Larking is a penguin who works at a fishing port. He is close friends with Harry Antics, even though they live far apart and don't see each other much, and also of Tom Yarner. He has strong faith in the kindness of others. He is currently the Vice President of a fishing port. He writes and e-mails his friends often.
History
Dick was born in the sub-Antarctic to two homeless penguins. They loved him very much, but didn't have a lot of money to support him. While out on the streets, he felt hungry, and decided to steal a fish from market stall. He was caught and arrested. In jail, Dick felt bad about what he did, and was saddened that he was in trouble, but told himself that "Everything happens for a reason, even bad things. Any misfortune in your life could be a blessing in disguise. All you need to do is go on through life with faith in yourself, hope for the future and be determined to make things better." Dick determined to make things better and talked to the owner, Mr. Yarner about why he did what he did and the bad state he and his family were in. Mr. Yarner, felt pity and dropped the charges. Mr. Yarner then gave Dick a job at the fishing port to pay back for the fish, and showed him his son, Tom. Tom and Dick became close friends at the fishing port. When Dick finished paying off, Mr. Yarner decided to give him a proper education and sent him to a private school, which his parent's liked.
Dick and Tom were close buddies, but people didn't like Dick because he came from a poor family. They often teased him and didn't want to be his friend. Dick had a positive attitude, but sometimes would cry himself to sleep. Tom was worried about Dick, and one time when someone threw a drink at Dick, Tom got angry and beat the kid up. Tom was suspended but the students felt bad about being mean to Dick, and they became better.
When Dick grew up, he worked at Mr. Yarner's fishing port, and helped fix the machinery. Later, he met a young lad named Harry Antics, who he had to spend time with. Dick became sort of like a big brother to Harry, who didn't have any siblings. Harry often turned to Dick for advice, which Dick fulfilled. Harry and Dick kept working with each other, even though Harry had to balance college later on.
Tom's father died of unknown causes, and many penguins went to his funeral, including Dick. Tom became the new owner of the port, but it was being overshadowed by another fish market that is a division of Von Injoface Enterprises. Tom had to cut prices, and lay off many workers, including Harry. Dick didn't like this and went to the other fish market to see what was going on. The other fish market claimed that they were successful, and couldn't do anything about it, but agreed that they would buy Tom's port and re-employ the people who were laid off. Tom agreed to sell his area, and became manager of the port, and Dick told Harry the good news. Tom was delighted to help a friend of a friend, and put Harry into the business again.
Tom, Dick, and Harry were given a task of creating artificial mobile islands that could be used to travel the ocean to catch more fish. Harry, being a great mathematician, was a great help for this, and Dick kept the designs. One night, however, Decapod snuck in to steal the blueprints. Dick heard noise, and woke up to check what was going on, and stepped on the krill. Decapod was very injured, but vowed that he wouldn't give up trying to steal the blueprints. For the next 18 years, he was unsuccessful.
Dick got news that Harry had two children. He visited his friend and saw the two, which he thought were beautiful. Dick spent time with the kids, but was very busy so they didn't really get to know each other.
The islands were finally finished, but the economy would get into a depression. The fishing port would have to sell nearly everything they own to support themselves, and Tom, Dick, and Harry were soon unemployed, but Tom found out about another fishing port in Shiverpool, which Dick checked out. Harry's wife became terrible ill. Dick told Harry that they were going to Shiverpool to get a job to raise money for a cure. However, Fanny died, and Dick went to her funeral.
The economy started to get better, and Tom started his own fishing business again, with Dick as Vice President. It wasn't too successful, but was better than the one he just quit. Harry had a debt to pay for his sons' colleges, and worked with Tom and Dick. Harry married his childhood friend, Cherry, to help him with his money problems, and Dick was glad that Harry was managing his life. Harry moved to the Sub-Antarctic to be closer to his kids, and promised Dick that he would write to him.
Personality
Dick is an understanding penguin who gets along with people well, and gives advice to those in need. He wants people to be happy and live for others.
